Dr Helen Weston - Gamification and the school reading program
Term 2 Meeting: Wednesday 5th
June at 7.30pm
We are excited to have Dr Helen Weston join us to discuss her recent action research project, undertaken as a member of the Global Action Research Collective (GARC), for the International Girls’ Schools Coalition. Helen is the Program Leader – Library and Research at Loreto College, Coorparoo, Queensland and is also the ALIA Schools representative to ACSL (Australian Coalition for School Libraries). Helen’s research addressed the issue of Year 7 girls identifying as not interested in reading and believing they cannot find anything of interest to read. To address this issue, Helen explored the introduction of gamification to a reading program in an independent Catholic girls’ school. Her planned action was to have students collaborate in teams to play a series of online and offline games, based on novels, authors, and genres. The students also collaborated to generate content that was used to create some of the games. Join us to hear more about Helen’s project and the outcome of her action research project.
