Glass Box Feedback: Turning AI Chatbots into Metacognitive Writing Partners

This session takes participants through an action research project in which an AI chatbot was used to develop student writing skills, shifting the AI away from just being an opaque “black box” to an effective learning tool. Participants will be taken through the process of co-constructing a custom AI chatbot with students, as well as how to assess the suitability of AI platforms in terms of student safety, access and equity. Work samples will be shown that illustrate both writing development and student perceptions of using AI and participants will be shown how to use the chatbot themselves.
